How do you rank in ChatGPT?
You do not rank in ChatGPT the way you rank on Google, because it writes an answer and picks its own sources. What you can do is five things: let the crawlers in, keep your facts consistent, publish pages that answer one question each, earn mentions on other sites, and test a fixed set of questions every month. Nobody can guarantee a mention, and anyone who does is selling something they do not control.
This post is the working method, with a way to test it. For the wider idea of how AEO, GEO and SEO differ, read our guide to generative engine optimisation. If you would rather have it done and tracked for you, that is our AEO and GEO service. For a page-by-page fix list, see our AEO checklist for small businesses.
What do you control and what do you not?
You control your pages, your facts and your testing. You do not control which sources an assistant chooses, what it writes or whether two people get the same answer. Knowing the line keeps you from paying for things nobody can deliver.
| You control | You do not control | |
|---|---|---|
| Access | robots.txt, indexing, page speed | How often a crawler visits |
| Content | What your pages say and how clearly | Which passage an assistant quotes |
| Facts | Your name, services, address, hours everywhere you publish | What old sources elsewhere still say |
| Mentions | Whether you ask for reviews and listings | Whether anyone writes about you |
| Testing | The question list, the schedule, the log | The answer you get on a given day |
Spend your effort in the left column.
Step 1: Can the crawlers reach your site?
If a crawler is blocked, nothing else in this post matters. Two checks cover most of it: Google can index your pages, and OpenAI's search crawler is not blocked.
Google. Google's page on AI features and your website says a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. It also says indexing and serving are not guaranteed. Check in Search Console that your key pages are indexed and that nothing carries a noindex or nosnippet rule by mistake.
OpenAI. OpenAI's bot documentation says OAI-SearchBot is for search, and that sites opted out of it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. It separates this from GPTBot, which relates to model training, so you can allow one and disallow the other. The same page says a robots.txt change can take about 24 hours to take effect. Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and read it. Many sites block all unknown bots through a plugin or a host default without anyone knowing.
Also check that your content is in the HTML. Text that only appears after heavy JavaScript runs, or sits inside images, may not be read at all.
Step 2: Are the facts about you the same everywhere?
Assistants work from many sources. If your site says one thing, your directory listing another and an old article a third, you get a muddled answer or none. Pick one version and apply it everywhere.
Write a one-page fact sheet with:
- Business name, spelled the same way each time
- What you do, in one plain sentence
- City or service area
- Phone, email and opening hours
- Year founded
- Names of founders or key people, if you publish them
- Your starting prices, if you show them
Then compare it with your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, LinkedIn and every directory you appear in. Fix the mismatches. This is dull work and it is the most reliable part of the method, because you control all of it.
Step 3: Does each page answer one question?
A page that tries to answer ten questions gives a machine nothing clean to quote. Aim for one question per page or per section, with the answer in the first two sentences and the detail after.
A useful test is to read only the first two sentences under each heading. If a stranger could repeat them accurately, the section works. If they are throat-clearing, rewrite. The glossary entry on AEO shows the pattern. Our checklist post has the full before-and-after editing rules, so we will not repeat them here.
As for markup: Google's AI features page says there is no special schema.org structured data you need to add, and no AI text files or new machine-readable files needed. Structured data can still help Google understand a page, so add it where it is accurate. Just do not expect it to open the door.
Step 4: Who else talks about you?
Assistants tend to repeat what several independent sources agree on. A claim that appears only on your own site reads as marketing. One that appears in a directory, a local news story and a customer review reads as fact.
This is slow, and it cannot be faked. Real options include:
- Listings in the directories your buyers already use
- Reviews from real customers, asked for politely
- Industry association or chamber of commerce pages
- A guest article or interview in a publication your buyers read
- A podcast or event where you are a named speaker
Never buy mentions in bulk. Google's spam policies list buying or selling links for ranking purposes as link spam, and we would avoid anything that looks like it.
Step 5: How do you test whether it is working?
Test the same questions every month and write down the answers. A fixed list lets you compare month to month. One lucky answer proves nothing, and one bad answer proves nothing either.
How we do it:
- Write 20 questions your buyers really ask. Pull them from sales calls, WhatsApp and email. Include some that name your city.
- Run them in the tools your buyers use. For example ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI answers.
- Save every answer with the date, or a screenshot.
- Fill in a log. Use these columns:
| Date | Question | Tool | Named us? | What was said | Sources cited | Wrong or missing? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026-11-04 | (your question) | (tool) | yes / no | (short note) | (links) | (what to fix) |
- Act on the "wrong or missing" column. Often the fix is a listing that is out of date, not a page on your site.
- Repeat on the same day each month and note what changed.
Be honest about what the log can and cannot show. Answers vary by person, location and day, and Google counts AI feature clicks inside the Web search type in Search Console, so you cannot split that traffic out. Watch the trend over months, add branded searches and direct visits, and ask new enquiries how they found you.
What should you not waste time on?
Skip anything sold as a shortcut. There is no paid slot in an AI answer for ordinary businesses, no submission form and no file that forces a mention. A tool that gives you a single "AI visibility score" is sampling prompts in its own way, so treat the number as that vendor's estimate.
Do not stuff pages with the questions you want to be asked, and do not publish dozens of thin pages. Both make the site worse for people, which makes it worse for machines too.

Frequently asked questions
Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?
Not as an ordinary business. There is no ad slot or submission form for being cited in a ChatGPT answer. What you can pay for is the work: fixing access, facts and pages, and running the monthly test.
How often should I run the question test?
Once a month is enough for most small businesses. More often just produces noise, because answers differ from day to day. Run it on the same day each month with the same list.
Do I need to allow GPTBot to appear in ChatGPT search?
OpenAI's documentation treats OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot as separate. OAI-SearchBot is the one for search, and GPTBot relates to training. Whether to allow GPTBot is your decision about training use, not about appearing in search answers.
Will Google AI Overviews send me traffic?
Possibly, if your page is indexed and chosen, but it is not guaranteed. Google says clicks from these features are included in the Web search type in Search Console. You cannot see them as a separate line.
Is this different from normal SEO?
It builds on it. Indexing, clear pages and trust still matter, and the extra work is mostly consistency, quotable answers and a testing habit. If a plan has a task with no reason that also helps ordinary search, ask why.
