What is on an AEO checklist?
An AEO checklist is a list of page and profile fixes that make it easy for a search engine or AI tool to lift one correct answer from your site. The 15 below are grouped into pages, facts, markup, profile and reviews, and proof. Tick each one off, and start with the group that is weakest.
AEO means answer engine optimisation, and the AEO glossary entry has the short definition. This post is the on-page list. For crawler checks and a monthly test method, read how to appear in ChatGPT and Google AI answers. If you would like us to do the work, see our AEO and GEO service.
One honest note before you start. None of these fixes guarantees a mention in any AI answer. They make your site clearer for people first, and that is also what machines read.
Group 1: Pages
How should a page be written for answers?
Open each section with the answer, then explain. A reader and a machine both find the answer in the first two sentences, and the rest is there for people who want detail.
| # | Fix | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Write headings as the question people type | Matches how people search and ask |
| 2 | Put the answer in the first one or two sentences under each heading | The easiest passage to quote |
| 3 | Give each key service one page that answers one need | A mixed page gives no clean answer |
| 4 | Use a table or numbered list for comparisons and steps | Short, structured text is easy to lift |
| 5 | Add a visible FAQ section to service and location pages | Real buyer questions, answered where people read |
Before and after. Here is the same section on a clinic page, written two ways.
- Before: "Our clinic was founded with a passion for care, and over the years we have grown to offer many treatments. Many of our patients ask about whitening, and the answer depends on several things."
- After: "Teeth whitening usually lasts from several months to a couple of years, depending on your diet and habits. Your dentist will confirm what to expect after checking your teeth. Below are the factors that change it."
The second version states a fact, and nothing about the clinic is hidden. (Check any health claim with the practitioner before publishing.)
Group 2: Facts
Why do consistent facts matter?
A machine that finds three versions of your phone number or services is less likely to repeat any of them. Consistency is cheap to fix and you control it fully.
| # | Fix | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | Write one fact sheet: name, services, city, phone, email, hours, founding year | One source of truth to copy from |
| 7 | Make your site, Business Profile, Bing Places, LinkedIn and directories match it | Contradictions create doubt |
| 8 | State who you serve and where, in one plain sentence on the home and about pages | A stranger can quote it unedited |
Mind the small details. "Astrafolio" spelled three ways, or hours that differ between your site and your listing, are exactly the kind of mismatch to remove.
Group 3: Markup
Do you need FAQ schema?
You can add it, but do not expect it to do much by itself. Google's page on AI features and your website says there is no special schema.org structured data you need to add to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Structured data helps Google understand a page, so we add it where it is accurate.
On FAQ markup specifically: Google's FAQ page carries a note dated 15 June 2026 saying the FAQ rich result is no longer shown in Search results. The questions on your page still help readers. Treat FAQPage markup as optional description, not as a way to get a special display.
| # | Fix | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 9 | Add Organization and LocalBusiness markup that matches your fact sheet | Confirms who you are in machine-readable form |
| 10 | Add Article markup with a named author to blog posts | Shows who wrote it and when |
| 11 | Keep every markup field in line with visible text | Google's structured data policies say not to mark up content that is not visible to readers |
If you add FAQPage markup, mark up only questions that appear on the page, word for word. Check your markup with a testing tool before you publish, and re-check after any page edit, because it is easy for text and markup to drift apart. You can read the vocabulary at schema.org and our schema markup glossary entry.
Group 4: Profile and reviews
What should you fix on Google Business Profile?
For a local business, your profile is often the first source an assistant or map result reads. Keep it complete and current, and ask for real reviews. Our Google Business Profile guide covers the steps, so here is the checklist only.
| # | Fix | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 12 | Check name, category, address, phone, hours and website link are correct | Wrong basics are the most common problem |
| 13 | List your real services and add photos of your actual premises and work | Shows what you do in your own words |
| 14 | Ask every happy customer for a review and reply to each one | Reviews are third-party evidence, and you can ask for them honestly |
Never buy reviews, and never ask only for five stars. Replies that are specific and polite read well to people and to machines.
Group 5: Proof
How do you show you are trustworthy?
Claims are weak on their own. Facts with a source, a name and a date are stronger, and they are safer for a machine to repeat.
| # | Fix | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 15 | Name a real author, add an updated date and link the source for every outside fact | A page that shows its working is easier to trust |
Add a short author line on blog posts, show real customer quotes only with permission, and state your starting prices if you can.

How do you work through the checklist?
Start with groups 2 and 4, because facts and profile fixes take an afternoon and clear up the most confusion. Then fix your two most important service pages (items 1 to 5). Add markup last, once the visible text is right.
A sensible order for a small business:
- Write the fact sheet (item 6) and correct your listings (items 7, 12, 13).
- Rewrite the top two service pages answer-first (items 1 to 4).
- Add a visible FAQ to each (item 5).
- Add markup that matches (items 9 to 11).
- Start asking for reviews (item 14) and add author and sources (item 15).
Then review once a quarter. Facts drift: a new phone number, a new service, an old price.

Frequently asked questions
Is an AEO checklist different from an SEO checklist?
They overlap a lot. SEO covers indexing, speed, links and rankings across your site, while AEO focuses on how clearly each page answers one question. Doing the AEO list also tends to improve ordinary SEO.
How long should an answer be under each heading?
Keep the first answer short, usually one to three sentences, then add detail below it. There is no official length. The test is whether a stranger could repeat it correctly without reading the rest.
Do I still need FAQ sections if the FAQ rich result is gone?
Yes, if your customers ask those questions. The visible section answers real objections on the page. Only the special display in Google results has been retired.
Which fix should a very small business do first?
Fix the facts: one fact sheet, then matching profile and listings. That takes a few hours and costs nothing. Page rewrites and markup come after.
Can I do this checklist without a developer?
Most of it, yes. Pages, facts, profile and reviews need no code. Markup usually needs a developer or a plugin, and it should be checked after every edit.
