Search and AEO

Answer engine optimisation (AEO): meaning and definition

Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is shaping a page so search engines, voice assistants and AI tools can lift one clear, correct answer from it.

Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the work of writing and structuring a page so a machine can take one clean answer from it. The "answer engine" might be Google's featured snippet, a voice assistant reading a reply aloud, or the first line of an AI answer. AEO is about the single question and the single answer, not about the whole page ranking.

Why it matters for your business

More of your buyers' questions now end with an answer on the results page or inside an assistant. If that answer comes from your page, your name is the one attached to it. If your page opens with three paragraphs of warm-up, the answer is harder to find and a competitor's tidier page gets used instead.

There is no trick to it. Google says plainly that you cannot mark up a page to become a featured snippet; its systems decide which page answers a query best. So AEO is really an editing discipline: put the answer where a reader, and a machine, would expect it.

An example

Say a clinic in Noida has a page titled "Teeth whitening". The old version starts with the clinic's history. The AEO version has a heading that matches what people type, "How long does teeth whitening last?", followed straight away by a two-sentence answer, then the detail, then a small table of options. Nothing about the clinic is hidden. The useful part has simply moved to the top.

How to use it

  1. List the real questions buyers ask you on calls, WhatsApp and email. Those beat any keyword tool.
  2. Give each question a heading in plain words, and answer it in the first 40 to 60 words beneath.
  3. Define a term in one sentence the first time you use it.
  4. Use tables and numbered steps for comparisons and processes. They are easy to quote.
  5. Keep facts (prices, hours, locations) the same everywhere they appear.
  6. Add accurate schema markup that matches the visible text, so machines are sure who is answering.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO different from SEO?

AEO is a part of SEO with a narrower goal. SEO tries to get the page ranked; AEO tries to get one passage on that page chosen as the answer. You need the page to be found before any passage can be used, so do both together.

Do I need special code for AEO?

No special code is required. Google says featured snippets are chosen by its systems and cannot be forced with markup. Clear headings, direct answers and accurate structured data are what help.

How do I know if AEO is working?

Check Search Console for the questions your pages appear for, and search those questions yourself to see whose answer shows. Results vary by day and device, so look at trends over a few weeks rather than one search.
