Search engine optimisation (SEO): meaning and definition

Search engine optimisation (SEO) is improving your website and reputation so search engines understand your pages and show them to people searching for what you offer.

Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the ongoing work of making your website easy for search engines to find, understand and trust, so it appears when people search for what you sell. Google's own guide puts it simply: SEO is about helping search engines understand your content and helping people decide whether to visit. It covers three areas: the technical health of the site, the content on it, and what the rest of the web says about you.

Why it matters for your business

Paid ads stop the day you stop paying. A page that ranks keeps bringing visitors for as long as it stays useful and the competition does not overtake it. For many service businesses, the people searching "accountant in Noida" or "Shopify developer Dubai" are already close to buying, which makes those visits valuable.

SEO also underpins the newer work. AI assistants that search the web still find pages through crawling and ranking, so AEO and GEO sit on top of ordinary SEO rather than replacing it.

An example

A furniture shop in Mumbai has one homepage listing everything. It ranks for its own name and little else. The SEO plan gives each main product range its own page with a clear title, real photos with descriptive alt text and answers to common questions about delivery and materials. It fixes slow images, adds the shop to Google Business Profile with the same address as the site, and asks happy customers for reviews. None of that is clever. It is the basic work, done properly and kept up.

Be patient and sceptical. Google says some changes take effect in hours and others in several months, and that there are no secrets that will automatically rank a site first. Anyone promising page one by a date is guessing. Our post on how long SEO takes for a new website sets realistic expectations.

Frequently asked questions

How long does SEO take to work?

It depends on your site's age, your competition and how much needs fixing. Google itself says some changes show within hours and others take months. Judge progress over several months using impressions and enquiries, not one week's rankings.

Can I do SEO myself?

Yes, much of the basic work is within reach of an owner: clear pages, a complete Google Business Profile, reviews and fixing obvious errors in Search Console. Bring in help when technical issues, many pages or strong competition make it a full-time job.

Is SEO a one-time job?

No. Competitors publish, search engines update and your own business changes. A site that was well optimised two years ago drifts unless someone keeps the content, technical health and listings current.
