The short answer
How long does SEO take? For a new website, it usually takes months, not weeks, and nobody can promise you a date. Anyone who says "page one in 30 days" is guessing or selling. Google itself says that some changes take effect in a few hours and others could take several months. That range is wide because the real answer depends on your market, your competitors and the work you put in.
What we can tell you is what moves the timeline, what to do while you wait, and how to tell whether things are heading the right way.
What Google says about timing
Google's own SEO Starter Guide has a section called "How long until I see impact in search results?" It says: "Every change you make will take some time to be reflected on Google's end. Some changes might take effect in a few hours, others could take several months." You can read it in Google's SEO Starter Guide.
Notice what it does not say. There is no standard number of weeks. Google does not publish a schedule, and no agency has a private one.
Why a new website is slower
A new site starts with nothing. Google has not seen it, no other site links to it, and nobody has searched for your name. Before you can rank for anything, three things have to happen.
- Google has to find your pages. A sitemap and a working Search Console account help, but discovery is not instant.
- Google has to decide your pages are worth showing. It looks at whether the page answers the search, whether the site loads well on a phone and whether the content is clear.
- People have to trust you. Links from real sites, reviews and mentions take time to build, because they depend on other people.
None of this is a trick. It is a slow start for any business that has not been around long.
What changes the timeline
Two new websites can behave very differently. These are the things that usually decide it.
| Factor | Faster | Slower |
|---|---|---|
| Competition | A small local niche | Broad terms with many strong sites |
| Search type | "Plumber in Sector 62 Noida" | "Web design" |
| Technical state | Fast, mobile-friendly, indexable | Slow, broken pages, blocked by mistake |
| Content | One clear page per service | Thin pages or copied text |
| Local signals | Complete Google Business Profile, real reviews | No profile, no reviews |
| Consistency | Steady work every month | One burst, then nothing |
The biggest lever you control is what you aim at. A narrow, specific search, such as a service in your own city, is a far more realistic first target than a broad national term. Start narrow. Widen later.
A new domain versus an old one
If you are replacing an old site, do not throw away its address without a plan. Moving to a new address without proper redirects can discard the history the old pages built. If your site is brand new on a brand new domain, expect the slow start described above. If you are rebuilding, ask your developer how old URLs will be redirected before launch.
What to do in months 1 to 3
The first three months are about foundations. You will not see much traffic yet, and that is normal. This is the work that makes later months count.
Month 1: make the site findable
- Check that every page you want found can be indexed, and that nothing is blocked by mistake.
- Connect Google Search Console and submit your sitemap.
- Write a clear title and description for each page, with the main phrase near the start of the title.
- Make sure the site is fast and easy to use on a phone.
- If you serve a local area, claim and complete your Google Business Profile.
Month 2: build the pages people search for
- Give each service its own page, written for one search, not a list of everything you do.
- Answer real customer questions on those pages, in plain words.
- Add your address, hours, phone number and a clear way to book or enquire.
- Ask recent happy customers for honest reviews. Never buy them.
Month 3: start earning trust and learning
- Look at Search Console to see which searches already show your site, even with few clicks.
- Improve pages that get impressions but few clicks, usually by sharpening the title and description.
- Start earning links the honest way: listings in real directories for your trade and city, local partners, suppliers and anything you have genuinely been featured in.
- Add one useful guide or post that supports a service page, and link the two.

How to tell it is working
Rankings are slow. These signs show up earlier.
- Pages are indexed. Search Console shows your pages as known to Google.
- Impressions appear. Your site starts showing up in searches, even at the bottom of page two.
- Branded searches grow. More people search for your business name.
- Profile actions rise. Calls and direction requests from your Business Profile increase.
Do not judge the work by one week of numbers. Compare month to month, and look at the direction.
What to be careful with
We would rather be plain about this than win a sale.
- Guaranteed rankings. Nobody outside Google controls rankings, so nobody can guarantee them. Walk away from anyone who does.
- Cheap links in bulk. Bought links can do more harm than good.
- Copied or auto-generated pages at scale. They add pages, not value.
- Quitting at month three. This is the point where many owners stop, just before the work starts to show. Decide on your time frame before you begin and judge it fairly.
Should you run ads while you wait?
SEO and paid ads solve different problems. Ads can send visitors the day they start, and stop the day you stop paying. SEO is slower and keeps working without a per-click bill. Many new businesses use both: ads for early enquiries, SEO for the longer run. Our post on SEO vs paid ads, and where to spend first walks through how to choose.

Frequently asked questions
How long does SEO take to work for a new website?
It usually takes months, and the exact time cannot be promised. Google says some changes show in a few hours and others could take several months. A narrow local search is typically quicker to win than a broad national one.
Can a new website rank on page one in 30 days?
It is unlikely for anything competitive, and nobody can guarantee it. A very narrow search with little competition can move faster, but you should not plan around it. Treat any 30-day promise with suspicion.
Does SEO get faster after the first year?
Often the work compounds, because older pages gain trust and each new page has a stronger site behind it. That is a general pattern, not a rule, and it depends on keeping the work up. Results still vary by market.
Do I need to do anything after I launch the site?
Yes. Submit your sitemap in Search Console, complete your Business Profile if you serve a local area, and keep adding useful pages. A site left alone after launch rarely grows.
Is SEO worth it if it takes this long?
For most businesses that want steady enquiries without paying per click, yes. If you need customers this month, pair it with ads or direct outreach. SEO is a long-term asset, not a quick fix.
How do I know if my SEO agency is doing real work?
Ask for a monthly report that shows what was done, what Search Console shows and what comes next. Ask who owns the accounts. A good agency explains the work in plain words and does not hide behind promises.
