The short answer
A Google Business Profile without a website can be enough for a simple local business, such as a one-person trade or a shop where customers just call or walk in. It is not enough once people need to compare you, read details, book online or trust you before they get in touch. A profile gets you found. A website lets you explain, prove and convert. If you can only do one first, do the profile, then add a site.
What a Google Business Profile does well
A profile is the listing that appears on Google Search and Maps when someone looks for a business like yours nearby. It is free to set up. Done properly, it shows:
- your business name, category and address
- opening hours and phone number
- photos
- customer reviews and your replies
- buttons to call or get directions
For a person standing outside in the rain looking for "pharmacy near me", that is often all they need. If you have not set one up yet, our Google Business Profile guide walks through it step by step.
What a profile does not do
A profile is a small card on a page that Google owns. That sets limits.
- It is not yours. Google decides how it looks, what it shows and what features exist. Features change, and you cannot control that.
- It has little room to explain. You cannot lay out a full service, a process or a price range the way a page can.
- It cannot rank for what people search beyond your area. It is built for local, nearby searches.
- It gives you less to build on. A website gives you pages you can improve over time. A profile is mostly fixed fields.
- It rarely closes the sale. A customer who is unsure about you will look for more before they spend.
Because Google controls the listing, relying on it alone is a bit like running a shop in someone else's building with no lease.
When a profile alone is enough
It can be enough when most of these are true.
- Customers already know what they need and just want your address or number.
- Almost all your work comes from people nearby.
- You do not sell online or take bookings online.
- Your service is simple and the price does not need explaining.
- You get most work by phone call or word of mouth.
A small tea stall, a local tailor or a tyre repair shop might fit this. Even then, keep the profile accurate and ask for reviews.
When you need a website
You probably need one if any of these sound like you.
- Your service needs explaining, such as a clinic, a law practice, an interior designer or a coaching business.
- People compare several businesses before choosing.
- You want enquiries or bookings outside your opening hours.
- You serve more than one area or want customers from further away.
- You want to show past work, certifications you really hold or detailed answers to common questions.
- You advertise, and need somewhere good to send visitors.
If you are weighing the whole question, our post on why every small business needs a website goes deeper on the reasoning.
Profile versus website, side by side
| Google Business Profile | Website | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost to start | Free | Paid (ours from $2,500) |
| Who controls it | You | |
| Shows hours, phone, directions | Yes | Yes |
| Shows reviews | Yes, on the listing | You can display them too |
| Room to explain services | Little | As much as you need |
| Online booking and forms | Limited | Fully up to you |
| Works for searches beyond "near me" | Weak | Yes, with SEO work |
| Builds value over time | Slowly | Yes, as pages and content grow |
They are not rivals. The strongest local setup uses both, with the website linked from the profile and the profile's reviews supporting the site.
What a website adds that a profile cannot
A place to answer questions
Every business gets the same five or six questions again and again: what does it cost, how long does it take, do you cover my area, can I see examples. A page can answer them before the customer calls, which saves you time and makes the enquiries you do get better.
Control and ownership
Your site is your own address on the internet. You choose the wording, the layout and what happens when someone clicks. With us, you own all the code, designs and accounts.
A way to be found for more searches
A profile helps you appear for local, nearby searches. A website with a page for each service can also appear for the searches people make when they are still deciding. That takes time, and our post on how long SEO takes for a new website explains what to expect.
A better target for ads and referrals
When you run ads or someone recommends you, they need somewhere to point. A clear page converts better than a listing.
What to do if you only have a profile today
You do not have to build everything at once.
- Finish the profile. Check the name, category, hours, phone number and address are correct, add real photos and answer reviews.
- Start collecting reviews. Ask recent customers, politely and honestly. Never pay for them or write your own.
- Start with a small site. Five clear pages are plenty at the beginning: home, services, about, contact and a short FAQ.
- Link the two. Add your website address to the profile, and put your address and a map on the site.
- Grow from there. Add pages for each service and area as you go.

Frequently asked questions
Can I run a business with only a Google Business Profile?
Yes, for a simple local business where customers call or visit. It works poorly when people need detail, want to book online or compare you with others. Treat it as a strong starting point rather than a full online presence.
Is a Google Business Profile better than a website?
They do different jobs. The profile gets you found nearby and shows reviews, hours and directions. The website lets you explain your work and gives you full control. Most local businesses do best with both.
Can I create a Google Business Profile with no website?
Yes. A website is optional when you set up a profile, and you can add one later. If you have a site, add its address to the profile.
Will a website help my Google Maps ranking?
We cannot promise that. Google has not published a simple formula, and results differ by market. A site that clearly matches what your profile says is good practice, and it gives you more ways to be found.
Which should I build first, the profile or the website?
Start with the profile because it is free and quick. Then build a small website, even five pages, as soon as you can. Add more pages as the business grows.
What if Google changes or removes my profile?
It can happen, for example through a suspension or a change in how listings work. That is the strongest argument for owning a website. If the listing disappears, you still have a place customers can reach you.
