Core Web Vitals are three measurements Google uses to judge how a page feels to real visitors: how fast the main content appears, how quickly the page reacts when someone taps, and whether things jump around while it loads. They are measured from real Chrome users, not just lab tests, and web.dev lists the current three as LCP, INP and CLS.
Why it matters for your business
A slow or jumpy page loses people before they read your offer, especially on mobile data.
On rankings, keep expectations sensible. Google says good Core Web Vitals align with what its core ranking systems seek to reward and recommends achieving them, but it does not promise a ranking gain. A fast page with weak content will not beat a slower page that answers the question far better. Think of the vitals as removing a handicap, not as a shortcut.
An example
| Metric | What it measures | "Good" means |
|---|---|---|
| LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) | When the biggest visible element, often the hero image or headline, finishes showing | 2.5 seconds or less |
| INP (Interaction to Next Paint) | How quickly the page visibly responds after a tap, click or key press | 200 milliseconds or less |
| CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) | How much the layout moves unexpectedly while loading | 0.1 or less |
Google judges these at the 75th percentile of visits, separately for mobile and desktop, so most of your visitors need a good experience, not just the ones on fast phones. INP replaced First Input Delay (FID) as a Core Web Vital in 2024; any report still talking about FID is out of date.
A typical case: a restaurant site with a 4 MB photo in the hero fails LCP on mobile. A cookie banner that pushes the menu down after loading fails CLS. A booking widget that freezes the page for a second after each tap fails INP. Each has a different fix.
How to use it
- Open the Core Web Vitals report in Google Search Console. It groups your URLs by status using real-user data.
- Run a key page through PageSpeed Insights to see which element causes each problem.
- Fix LCP with smaller, properly sized images and fewer render-blocking scripts.
- Fix CLS by reserving space for images, ads and banners.
- Fix INP by cutting heavy JavaScript, especially third-party widgets and tag scripts.
- Re-check after a few weeks; field data takes time to update.

Frequently asked questions
Is FID still a Core Web Vital?
No. web.dev states that INP became a stable Core Web Vital in 2024, replacing First Input Delay. The current three are LCP, INP and CLS.
Why does PageSpeed Insights give a different score from Search Console?
The lab score in PageSpeed Insights comes from one simulated test, while Search Console shows field data from real Chrome users over time. Use the lab test to find causes and the field data to judge whether visitors' experience has improved.
Will passing Core Web Vitals get me to the top of Google?
Not on its own. Google recommends good scores and says they align with what its ranking systems reward, but relevance and content quality matter far more. Passing removes a weakness; it does not outrank a better answer.
