How do video editors in India charge?
Video editors in India charge in four ways: per video, per finished minute, per hour, or as a monthly retainer. The rate depends on how much footage there is, how much work each minute needs and how fast you want it back. We do not quote rates here because the range is wide and we have not published ours, but we can show you how to compare any quote.
This guide covers editing only: you already have footage and need it cut. If you are asking what filming costs, that is a different question, and we cover it in video shoot cost in Delhi NCR.
What are the pricing models, and who does each suit?
| Model | How it works | Suits | Risk to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Per video | One price for one finished video of an agreed length | Single ads, event recaps, testimonials | Is the length fixed? Are revisions included? |
| Per finished minute | The price follows the length of the final video, not the raw footage | Long videos, explainers, courses | Some editors count raw minutes, so ask which one |
| Per hour | You pay for the hours the editor works | Fixes, small changes, unclear projects | No ceiling unless you set a cap |
| Monthly retainer | A fixed number of videos each month | Creators, brands and agencies with steady work | Agree the number of videos, length and revision rounds |
If you post every week, a retainer saves time and keeps the look consistent. If you have one video, pay per video. If the project is vague, an hourly arrangement with a written cap is fairer than a fixed price that nobody believes.
Our video editing service works per project or per month, shaped around your budget. Once the price is agreed it does not change.
What changes the price of editing?
The price follows the work, and the work depends on seven things.
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Length of raw footage | An editor has to watch it all. Ten hours of raw clips for a two-minute video is a lot of viewing time |
| Length of the final video | Longer videos need more cuts, more sound work and more checks |
| Graphics and motion text | Animated titles, lower thirds and charts take far longer than plain cuts |
| Captions and subtitles | Accurate captions need checking, and a second language needs a translation you trust |
| Sound | Cleaning echo and noise, balancing voices and adding music takes real time |
| Number of formats | Vertical, square and landscape versions each need their own framing |
| Turnaround and revisions | A rush job and open-ended changes both push the price up |
The biggest hidden cost is messy footage. Unlabelled clips, no order and missing shots mean the editor spends hours sorting before cutting. Tidy files are the cheapest way to lower a quote.
Why is reel editing priced differently from long video?
A reel is short, but each second carries more work. The editor cuts fast, times captions to the speech, balances sound and builds a cover frame. A thirty-second reel can take longer per minute than a ten-minute talking video.
That is why "reel editing price" cannot be turned into a rate per minute. Price reels per video, and agree the style first. If you plan a month of reels, see our guide on how to plan a reel shoot to hand your editor clean, organised footage.
What should you send an editor?
A short brief saves rounds of back-and-forth. Copy this template and fill it in:
| Item | What to write |
|---|---|
| Purpose | What the video is for and who will watch it |
| Platform | Where it will play: Instagram, YouTube, website, an event screen |
| Length | The target length of the final video |
| Formats | 9:16, 1:1, 16:9, or all three |
| Footage | A link to the folder, original files, and a note on the best moments |
| Reference | Two videos whose style you like, and one you do not |
| Text | Names, titles, offers and any wording that must appear exactly |
| Captions | Language and style, for example Hindi in Roman script |
| Music | Your own licensed track, or ask the editor to suggest one |
| Deadline | The date, and who signs off |
| Revisions | How many rounds, and who sends the comments |
Send comments in one list from one person. Five people sending separate notes is how a simple edit becomes a long one.
What are the red flags when hiring a video editor?
These signs tell us to slow down:
- A price with no scope. If the quote does not list length, formats and revision rounds, it cannot be compared.
- Raw files held back. Ask who owns the project files and whether you can get them. Agree it before the work starts.
- No complete samples. Short highlight clips hide how a full video holds together. Ask for two or three finished videos.
- Free changes forever, or none at all. Both extremes cause trouble. A fair deal sets a number of rounds.
- Unlicensed music and stock clips. A copyright claim can remove your video or block your account. Ask where the music comes from.
- Pressure to pay everything upfront. A split payment, with part on delivery, protects both sides.
- A delivery date promised before they have seen the footage. No one can judge the work without seeing it.
Should you hire a freelancer, an agency or an editing partner?
Each fits a different need.
- Freelancer. Good for one person, one style and a steady flow. You manage the work yourself, and if they are ill or busy, the work stops.
- Agency. Good when you need planning, filming and posting together, and you want one team to answer to.
- Editing partner. Good when you already film, or you are an agency with your own clients and need extra capacity.
We work in all three ways. If you are an agency, we can edit quietly under your name, and we do not contact your client. If you are a founder with a folder of clips, we can start with one video to see how we work together. For the whole picture, see our video production page.

Frequently asked questions
Is editing priced by the minute of raw footage or the minute of the final video?
Both models exist, so ask which one the editor uses. Pricing by final minute is easier to predict. Pricing by raw footage is fairer when you send many hours of material for a short video.
Why is a short reel not cheaper than a long video?
Because the work per second is higher. Fast cuts, timed captions, sound and a cover frame all go into a short piece. The total may be smaller, but the effort per minute is not.
Can I get the project files after the edit?
Sometimes. Some editors keep them, others hand them over for a fee or as part of the deal. Decide before the work starts and write it in the agreement, so you can switch editors later without losing your work.
How much footage should I send for a short video?
Send everything you recorded for that video, but label it and note the best moments. Too little limits the edit, and too much unlabelled footage adds sorting time. A short note on the order you want helps more than extra clips.
Do I need to pay for music?
Use music that you or your editor has the right to use for your platform. Licence rules differ for personal accounts, business accounts and paid ads. When in doubt, ask the editor to list every track used and where it came from.
