Reels vs posts is the wrong fight, because the formats do different jobs. Reels are the format meant for reaching people who do not follow you yet. Carousels teach. Single posts remind. Stories close. The format that brings enquiries is the one that fits the job you need done this month, and you find out which by counting enquiries, not likes. Our social media management work starts from that count.
We will not quote reach or engagement figures here, because we could not confirm any on Meta's own pages. What follows is how we think about it, and a test you can run on your own page.
Do reels bring customers?
They can, but mostly by getting you seen, not by closing the sale. A Reel is built to travel beyond your followers. Someone who has never heard of your business may watch it, tap your profile and decide whether you look real. That is the first step of an enquiry, and often not the last.
The sale usually happens later and somewhere else: in a DM, on a call or in a WhatsApp chat. So a Reel with a million views and no enquiry did one job well and did not do the job you needed. A Reel watched by a few hundred nearby people that leads to three booking messages did the job. We say this because we meet pages that count the first kind as success.
What job does each Instagram format do?
Think of the formats as stages in a customer's path, from stranger to booked.
| Format | Main job | Best for | Weak at |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reel | Reach new people | A face, a process, a before and after, a quick answer | Detailed explanations |
| Carousel | Teach, so people save and share | Checklists, comparisons, step-by-step answers | Reaching strangers on its own |
| Single post | Remind and show proof | A finished job, an offer, a team photo | Telling a story |
| Story | Close the gap | Hours, offers, polls, "message us now" | Lasting; it disappears |
This is a view, not a law. A Reel can teach, and a carousel can reach new people. But if you have to choose where the next hour goes, the table is a fair starting point.
Which format should you pick for each goal?
Start with the outcome you want, then pick the format.
| Your goal this month | Lead with | Support with |
|---|---|---|
| Be found by people nearby | Reels | A tidy profile and highlights |
| Answer the questions people ask before buying | Carousels | A Reel for the one question asked most |
| Show you do real work | Single posts | A Reel of the same work |
| Get people to message you now | Stories with a link or message prompt | A pinned post that explains how to book |
| Win back people who nearly booked | Stories and replies to DMs | A post answering their usual doubt |
If you are a clinic or restaurant, our Instagram content plan for clinics and restaurants shows how these formats can fit into a month.
Why should you judge content by enquiries, not likes?
Likes are easy to count and easy to misread. A post that looks popular may have been liked by friends, staff or people who live nowhere near you. Enquiries are harder to count, but they are the only number that pays rent.
Count these, week by week:
- DMs that ask about price, timing or availability
- Calls where the caller says they saw you on Instagram
- Link clicks to your booking page or WhatsApp (shown in your account's own insights)
- Saved and shared messages, such as a post a friend forwards with "we should go here"
- Bookings or visits where the person mentions a specific post
Ask every new customer how they found you, and write the answer on a sheet. It takes ten seconds and it beats any dashboard. Our guide to getting customers from Instagram without ads covers the profile, the DM replies and the handoff to WhatsApp, which is where most of these enquiries are won or lost.
How do you run a simple four-week format test?
Keep it small. You are not running a science lab. You are trying to learn which format gets more people to message you.
- Week 1: baseline. Post as you normally do. Write down every enquiry and where it came from.
- Week 2: Reels week. Post two Reels and one other item. Keep topics and offers the same as before. Count enquiries.
- Week 3: carousel week. Post two carousels and one other item. Again, count.
- Week 4: single posts and Stories. Post two single posts with proof or an offer, and use Stories daily. Count.
Hold three things steady: the number of posts, the offer and the time you reply to messages. If you change those, you cannot tell what caused the difference.
How do you read the result honestly?
- One week is noise. A single good week can come from a festival, a rainy day or a friend's share. Look for the same pattern twice before you act on it.
- Look at enquiries per post, not per week. Two Reels and one carousel will not compare fairly with one of each unless you divide.
- Count the lag. An enquiry often arrives days after the post. Give each week a few days before you judge it.
- Do not trust a tiny sample. If you got two messages in total, you have a hint, not a result. Run the test again next month.
- Keep the winner, do not drop the rest. If Reels win, keep a carousel and a Story rhythm. The formats help each other.
If testing and counting feels like a lot on top of running a business, that is the work our social media management team does each month, and the video side is covered by Reels and short video production.
What should you do if Reels feel too hard to make?
Start with one a week, shot on your phone. Show a process, answer one question, or walk through your space. You do not need a studio. Keep it short, put the point in the first seconds and add captions so it works with the sound off.
If filming is the blocker, split the work. You film rough clips, and someone else edits them, writes the hook and picks the cover. That keeps the content real and saves your evenings. Do not skip Reels entirely because they feel awkward. Skip them only if your test shows they do not bring you enquiries.

Frequently asked questions
Are Instagram carousels better than Reels for a local business?
Neither is better in general. Carousels suit explanations people want to save, such as a checklist or a comparison. Reels suit introducing yourself to people who do not know you yet. Most local businesses need both.
How many Reels should a small business post a week?
One a week is a sensible start if you make them yourself, and two if someone helps with editing. A steady one beats five in a week followed by silence. Increase only when you can keep the pace.
Why do my Reels get views but no enquiries?
Often the Reel reaches people who are not your customers, or your profile does not say what you do and how to book. Check the bio, the link and the pinned posts first. Then make the next Reel about a question your buyers ask.
Is a high like count a sign that a post is working?
Not on its own. Likes can come from people who will never buy. Check whether the post led to messages, calls, link clicks or bookings before calling it a success.
How long should I run a format test before changing my plan?
Four weeks is the minimum for a rough read, and two rounds is better. If your enquiry numbers are small, extend it. A pattern that shows up twice is worth acting on.
