Cost per click (CPC) is the amount you pay when someone clicks your ad. In Google Ads there are two numbers: your maximum CPC, the most you are willing to pay, and your actual CPC, which Google defines as the final amount you're charged for a click. The actual figure is often lower than your maximum.
Why it matters for your business
CPC tells you what traffic costs, and it decides how many visitors your budget can buy. But it is not the number that pays your bills. A cheap click from someone who will never buy is expensive. A costly click from a ready buyer can be the best money you spend.
In Google Search, your actual CPC comes out of the auction. Google says you pay what is minimally needed to clear the Ad Rank thresholds and beat the advertiser directly below you. So better ad and page quality can lower your CPC without costing you position.
An example
These are round, illustrative numbers. A coaching institute sets a maximum CPC of INR 60 for "IELTS coaching Noida". On one search, INR 42 is enough to stay ahead of the ad below, so it is charged about INR 42, not INR 60.
Over a month the account spends INR 30,000 and gets 750 clicks. If 30 of those clicks become enquiries, the numbers look like this:
| Metric | Formula | Example result |
|---|---|---|
| Average CPC | Spend ÷ clicks | INR 40 |
| Cost per enquiry | Spend ÷ enquiries | INR 1,000 |
The second number is the one to judge the campaign by.
How to use it
- Set up conversion tracking first, so you can compare CPC with cost per enquiry or sale.
- Watch CPC by keyword, not just the account average.
- If CPC is rising, check quality before bids: ad relevance, landing page and click-through rate.
- Use our free Google Ads budget calculator to see what a given CPC means for clicks and leads at your budget.
To see how CPC is set inside the auction, read how Google Ads works. If you want a team that manages cost per customer rather than cost per click, see our Google Ads management.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay more than my maximum CPC?
With manual bidding you are generally not charged more than your maximum CPC. Bid adjustments and automated bidding can change what you pay on a single click, so check the strategy your campaign uses.
What is a good CPC?
It depends on your industry, your city and what a customer is worth to you. An INR 200 click can be fine for a high-value service and far too much for a low-priced product. Work backwards from what you can afford per customer.
Is CPC the same on Meta ads?
The idea is the same, but Meta usually optimises delivery for a result you choose, such as leads or purchases. There, cost per result and CPM are often more useful than CPC.
