Ad Rank is the score Google Ads works out each time your ad is eligible for a search. It decides whether your ad shows at all, where it sits against other ads, and what you pay for a click. Google says Ad Rank is calculated every time a user does a search, so it is never fixed.
Why it matters for your business
Ad Rank is why the biggest budget does not automatically win. Google lists six factors:
- Your bid
- The quality of your ads and landing page
- Ad Rank thresholds, the minimum an ad must reach to show
- How competitive the auction is
- The context of the search, such as location, device and time
- The expected impact of your ad assets, such as call buttons and sitelinks
Because quality sits next to bid, a smaller business with a sharper ad and a better page can sit above a bigger spender. Ad Rank also sets your price. Google's page on actual CPC says you pay what is minimally required to clear the thresholds and beat the Ad Rank of the advertiser directly below you.
Ad Rank is not the same as Quality Score. Ad Rank is the live calculation for each search. Quality Score is a 1 to 10 diagnostic you see in reports afterwards.
An example
This is a simplified, illustrative example; Google does not publish the formula. Two plumbers in Dubai bid on "emergency plumber". Plumber A bids more, but the ad is generic and links to a slow home page. Plumber B bids less, says "24 hour" in the headline because they really are open all night, adds a call asset, and links to a fast page about emergency call-outs.
On a mobile search late at night, Plumber B can win the higher position. Plumber A pays more per click to sit lower, or does not show at all if the ad falls below the threshold.
How to use it
- Match each ad to one search intent and echo what the searcher typed.
- Add the assets that genuinely apply to you: calls, sitelinks, location, callouts.
- Make the landing page fast and specific to the service in the ad.
- Use location and schedule settings so you compete hardest where the context favours you, such as your own city during opening hours.
- Before raising bids, check whether quality is the weaker half.
The full auction walk-through is in how Google Ads works. Our Google Ads management starts with tracking, then works on both halves of Ad Rank.
Frequently asked questions
Can I see my Ad Rank?
No. Google does not show an Ad Rank number in your account. You see its effects in impression share, top-of-page rates and actual CPC, and you see the related diagnostic in Quality Score.
Why does my ad position change from search to search?
Because Ad Rank is calculated fresh for each search. Competitors, the searcher's location and device, and the time of day all change, so your position can change too.
Will a higher bid always get me the top spot?
No. Bid is one of six factors. A weak ad or page can lose to a lower bid with better quality, and an ad below the threshold will not show at any price.
