Performance Max, often shortened to PMax, is a goal-based Google Ads campaign. You give it a conversion goal, a budget and creative assets, and Google's AI decides where to show your ads, what they look like and what to bid. Google says it lets advertisers access all of their Google Ads inventory from a single campaign, including YouTube, Display, Search, Discover, Gmail and Maps.
Why it matters for your business
PMax can reach buyers in places a Search campaign never would, and it can work well for shops with a good product feed. The trade-off is control. You are not choosing keywords and placements one by one; you are supplying ingredients and a goal.
That makes your data the steering wheel. Google says in its own guide that "AI is only as good as the data you put into it." If your conversion tracking counts page views or junk form fills as wins, PMax will happily buy more of them.
Google also says PMax is meant to complement keyword-based Search campaigns. When a search exactly matches a keyword in your Search campaign, the Search campaign takes priority.
An example
This is an illustrative example. An online tea shop in India has a Search campaign that is already profitable and a clean product feed. It adds a PMax campaign with one asset group per range (green tea, masala chai, gift boxes), each with its own headlines, images and a short video. It tracks purchases with real order values and sets a ROAS goal based on its margin.
It leaves the campaign alone for six weeks, as Google recommends for new campaigns, then reads the search terms and asset reports before changing anything.
How to use it
- Fix conversion tracking first, and value real sales or qualified leads.
- Start with Search if you are a service business with a small budget. Add PMax once Search is profitable.
- Build asset groups around one theme each, with a full set of headlines, images and video.
- Add audience signals, such as your customer list. They are hints, not hard targeting.
- Use brand exclusions and negative keywords where you need them, and read the search terms report that PMax now offers.

Frequently asked questions
Is Performance Max good for small businesses?
It can be, when tracking is accurate and the budget is enough for the system to learn. For a service business on a tight budget, a focused Search campaign is usually the safer first step.
Can I choose keywords in Performance Max?
Not as keywords. You can add search themes, which guide the campaign toward searches that matter to you, plus negative keywords and brand exclusions to keep it away from searches you do not want.
Will Performance Max replace my Search campaigns?
It should not. Google designs it to sit alongside Search, and an exact keyword match in your Search campaign takes priority. Many accounts run both.
